Smita Awasthi (2026)

Dr. Awasthi, is a psychologist with a doctorate in ABA from Queen’s University Belfast. She has spent 40 years working with individuals and families affected by autism and other developmental disabilities. In 2004 as the first Board Certified Behavior Analyst from Asia, M.E., Far East, she provided leadership in the dissemination of scientific interventions for people with autism as a mentor, educator and interventionist. She has many firsts to her credit. Dr. Awasthi conducted 50 workshops between 2005-2209 across the length and breadth of India, south Asia, Middle East and UAE. She then shifted to India in 2010 and founded Behavior Momentum India which became the first and the largest ABA based intervention center providing treatments to pediatric and adolescent populations. For capacity building she founded BMI School the first ABA Course provider in India and the region. In the last decade 70% of the behavior analysts in India have been her students. Dr. Awasthi forged research collaborations with the University of Stockholm, Queen’s University Belfast and Univ of North Texas and Mercy University, New York. She founded the not for profit NGO “ABA India” an affiliated Chapter of ABA International, which organized many international conferences with the support of eminent international behaviorists. She led the ABAI delegations meeting with the Govt. of India for the recognition of the profession of behavior analysts in India. Dr. Awasthi networked with Pediatricians and disseminated ABA through the “Diagnosis to Treatment” conferences. Dr. Awasthi built the first research team in India which studies the application of behavior analysis on children with autism. She has mentored students across South Asia and her students are today pioneers in their own countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and UAE. She is supporting various organizations with mentoring and building data based systems. She has four publications to her credit and has coauthored one book chapter. Her services towards dissemination of scientific intervention, and capacity building have been recognized. Dr. Awasthi is very interested in building technological systems for training in rural areas in regional languages. She is currently involved with cutting edge supervision training for young behavior analysts. Dr. Awasthi is an invited speaker at many National & International conferences.
