Focused on traffic and pedestrian safety, Dr. Van Houten has received more than $2 million in research funding from the Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and has been appointed to various boards dedicated to transportation and pedestrian safety. He has published more than 60 papers on this topic since 1974. The quality and impact of his work were recognized in 2013 by the Transportation Research Board, which awarded Dr. Van Houten and his co-authors the annual Patricia F. Waller Award. This award for outstanding research in transportation safety is highly competitive; Dr. Van Houten’s work (“Effects of High-Visibility Enforcement on Driver Compliance to Pedestrian Right-of-Way Laws”) was chosen from more than 5,000 papers.
